Interview with Lucy Beaumont writer of new C4 comedy Hullraisers

Tell me a bit about your co-writers.

“I wrote the pilot on my own and when we went to series, Anne-Marie and Caz got on board. They were brilliant because, like me, they’re from working-class backgrounds and they have friends who are just like our three main characters. Because Little Mom has lots of series, we had storylines to pick and choose from and we also ended up going off on our own tangents. There’s a cultural difference so some stories wouldn’t have worked here, but it was really good to have those seeds and that structure. We met the Little Mom guys on zoom, and they liked what we were doing”.

Sophie Duker, Chris Ramsey, Judi Love, Ardal O'Hanlon and Bridget Christie join Greg Davies and Alex Horne in series 13 of Taskmaster
Sophie Duker, Chris Ramsey, Judi Love, Ardal O’Hanlon and Bridget Christie join Greg Davies and Alex Horne

Channel 4’s BAFTA and National Comedy Award-winning behemoth is back for a brand-new series as Greg Davies’s revered golden noggin will be won for the 13th time by the comic who proves their mettle over 10 gruelling episodes. Ever present throughout proceedings is Greg’s miniature sidekick, Alex Horne, gripping onto his tablet for dear life and looking very proud of himself for being so ruthlessly efficient in administering each and every task.

The latest excitable intake are: stand-up, actor, and author Ardal O’Hanlon (Father Ted, C4), award winning comedian Bridget Christie (Stand Up For Her, Netflix), stand-up comedian, podcaster and TV host Chris Ramsey (The Chris Ramsey Show, Comedy Central), comedian and presenter Judi Love (Loose Women, ITV), and comedian, actress, and podcaster Sophie Duker (Live At The Apollo, BBC One).

Survival for this courageous quintet will depend on their abilities to paint perfectly with their lips, effectively wrangle a cement mixer and chase Alex around a tree while he’s pedalling a tricycle. Should they impress the Taskmaster, he will reward them with points and the occasional admiring word. But should they stumble or show any kind of weakness… he’ll scent blood and pounce on them like a puma. (Metaphorically).

The launch of series 13 also sees the unveiling of the brand new Taskmaster App; a show companion where viewers can watch the show on TV and score along at home, taking on the role of the mighty Taskmaster themselves. The app also features the Taskmaster Academy with quizzes from every series of the show, group and solo tasking games, and a Jukebox featuring all of the music from the show.

Taskmaster series 13 airs weekly from 9pm, Thursday 14th April 2022

‘The Full Monty’ Returns as Disney Plus Series With Original Cast and Creators

Latest Comedy News: Filming commenced on Monday in Sheffield and Manchester on “The Full Monty,” a Disney Plus limited series adaptation of the BAFTA-winning hit 1997 film.

The cast reprising their roles from the film include Robert Carlyle (“Trainspotting”) as Gaz, Mark Addy (“Game of Thrones”) as Dave, Lesley Sharp (“Before We Die”) as Jean, Hugo Speer (“Britannia”) as Guy, Paul Barber (“The Dumping Ground”) as Horse, Steve Huison (“The Royle Family”) as Lomper, Wim Snape (“Gentleman Jack”) as Nathan and Tom Wilkinson (“Batman Begins”) as Gerald. The series will also introduce a new cast of children and grandchildren of the returning characters.

Question Team, hosted by Richard Ayoade, is returning

Question Team is returning to Dave for a second series (8×60′). Produced by Interstellar, the UKTV Original series sets out to re-write the panel show rule book by making its comic players set the questions. The first series was one of the top performing commissions on Dave in 2021, attracting an average audience of 397k and peaking with 563k for episode one.

Each episode sees three comedians join the Question Team. But they’re not there to just answer the questions; they are the self-quizzing collective, and each guest must bring a unique round of questions, inspired by their own interests, for Richard Ayoade and the others to play. The sole stipulation is that their questions have proper answers, otherwise what goes down during their game is entirely up to them. So far, the series has welcomed comedians including James Acaster, Bob Mortimer, Nish Kumar, Kerry Godliman and Desiree Burch to come up with their unique rounds.

Andrew Buchan pens Passenger a darkly comic horror

ITV has commissioned Passenger from debut screenwriter Andrew Buchan who is best known for his acting roles on Broadchurch, The Honourable Woman, ABC Murders.

Passenger is a 6 x 60 darkly comic horror produced by the award-winning SISTER (This Is Going To Hurt, Chernobyl, Landscapers) for ITVX, ITV and BritBox International.                                                                         Latest comedy news and reviews        17th March 2022

In the small Northern village of Chadder Vale, a close-knit community is sent spinning on its axis following a series of strange and unnatural crimes.

After arriving there five years ago, Former Met Police Detective Riya Ajunwa has been searching for that ‘one big crime’, that one challenge that will make her feel alive again.

Then one night local girl, Katie Wells is mysteriously abducted. Her car is found abandoned and there are traces of blood on the seats. But the village barely has time to register Katie’s disappearance before she reappears the next day, safe and sound.

The rest of the villagers ask few questions and life resumes as normal. But for Riya, a relative outsider to the Chadder Vale way of life, none of this sits right. As a series of strange happenings and increasingly horrific crimes start unfolding within the village, the residents start resorting to short-sighted theories and blaming outside influences. Riya fights hard to convince the villagers that all is not as it seems. And before long she is drawn into a universe unlike anything she has ever seen.

Creator, writer and associate producer Andy Buchan commented:

“I’m unbelievably thrilled to be working with SISTER, ITV and BritBox International. I feel very lucky and very flattered they’ve gone with these scripts and I’m going to work my backside off to make them the best they can be. I’ve always loved shows where the known collides with the unknown … where you see communities faced with something horrifying and inexplicable, where, as a viewer, you’ve nothing in your kit-bag to explain it. When I started writing the scripts, I wanted to create something epic and unknown but also bed it somewhere close to home. Having grown up in Lancashire it felt like the perfect place for it. We’ll definitely see the residents of Chadder Vale pushed to their limits.”

Sarah Lancashire’s new  comedy drama, Julia, in which she plays chef Julia Child. Starts 12th April on Sky Atlantic

Channel 4 has today announced the commission of The Change, a brand new six-part comedy-drama series created, written by, and starring multi-award-winning stand-up comedian, actor and writer, Bridget Christie.

Linda, played by Christie, is a 50-year-old working class married mother of two, is having an existential crisis. Who is she? What is she? Is this it? Convinced she’s got early onset dementia after forgetting what a shoe is called, Linda’s GP informs her it is, in fact, the menopause. Feeling invigorated and empowered by this information, Linda decides to claw back some of the time she’s spent doing ‘invisible work’ over the years (not all 3.5 million minutes, just 131,500 of them) to do something for herself… for a change.

Dusting off her old motorbike that she hasn’t ridden in 30 years, Linda sets off alone to the spectacular wilderness of The Forest of Dean – in search of an identity, a purpose, and tree she climbed as a child. Along the way she meets an array of eccentric locals, including the infamous Eel Sisters, an angry local radio presenter and a mysterious man who lives in the woods with the wild boar. What could possibly go wrong?

With tongue in cheek, Bridget Christie said: “I’ve got a Channel 4 series??? Are you joking? I’m sorry I don’t know anything about this. Unless I’ve forgotten? I am having terrible trouble remembering things at the moment because of the menopause. What’s it about?”

Fiona McDermott, Head of Comedy at Channel 4, said: “Bridget pitched the show with the tag line ‘Shirley Valentine meets Deliverance. With Pigs’.  She had us at pigs.  We’re so thrilled to be working with her and Expectation and be able to hero a woman like Linda at the centre of a show that so brilliantly tackles big themes – feminism, health, identity, class and the natural world – but wraps them up with Bridget’s signature charm, curiosity and comic expertise.  It’s a timely show from a comic at the height of her powers.”

Catherine Tate’s series, Hard Cell, set in a fictional women’s prison, will be released on the Netflix next month.

Latest comedy news: Covering a six-week period at HMP Woldsley, Hard Cell is a mockumentary that follows prisoners and staff as they prepare for an upcoming rehearsal directed by ex-EastEnders star Cheryl Fergison.

According to the synopsis,”Rehearsals draw together an oddball collection of women as they find their voices, grow in confidence, and strengthen their friendships. Funny yet surprisingly moving, Hard Cell leans into the comical truth of prison life.”

Tate plays all six main characters. Laura, the governor of HMP Woldsley who believes in rehabilitating the inmates through creativity; Ros, a “popular, bouncy inmate” who’s fleecing her pen pal boyfriend; Anne Marie, the “mean ex-con” mum of Ros, only visits her daughter when she’s out of money. Then there’s Big Viv, a psychopathic lifer; Marco, a prison guard from Essex who got down to the last 32 on Love Island and finally Ange, who’s described as “timid first-timer” who doesn’t cope easily with her new environment.

Tributes have poured in for Only Fools and Horses actor Ron Pember, who has died aged 87.

Pember played the role of Baz, chair of the tenants’ association, in a 1983 episode of the iconic series, entitled Homesick. He also played Alain Muny in the BBC drama Secret Army in the 1970s.

Outside of TV, Pember also left his mark on the stage, most notably with his musical, Jack The Ripper, which he wrote in 1975 and which is still regularly produced by amateur theatre groups and companies the world over.

Johnny Vegas to Carry on Glamping

Last year, Johnny Vegas opened a glamping site. Nestled in the North Yorkshire countryside, the site featured a collection of vintage vehicles, including an old Maltese bus lovingly restored and named after Johnny’s late mum, Patricia.

Latest comedy news and reviews

Now, the award-winning comedian and entertainer is expanding his glamping enterprise and Channel 4 has commissioned Plum Pictures to make a second series of Johnny Vegas: Carry on Glamping.

This new six-part series follows Johnny and his long-suffering assistant Bev as they set about developing the business. After two years of hard work and having overcome a series of setbacks, including a ferry fire and a devastating crash damaging Patricia – not to mention a pandemic – the Yorkshire glampsite finally opened in 2021 and became a roaring success with bookings aplenty.

Unfortunately, planning restrictions mean expansion of the site isn’t possible and so Johnny and Bev are once again trying to find themselves a new home for the eclectic collection of repurposed vehicles owned by Johnny and fellow enthusiasts Claire and Jim. Not that this new problem has stopped Johnny buying up more vehicles in desperate need of rescuing, including – to Bev’s horror – an old helicopter.

Now they not only need a new home for their expanding collection of vehicles, but Johnny wants this new site to be able to host events, comedy festivals, music gigs and weddings for vintage-loving couples. And Johnny’s hoping to finally get ordained online and officiate the odd wedding himself, of course!

This project will push Johnny and, more importantly, Bev to their very limits.

Johnny Vegas said: “It blew both Bev and I away how lovingly received Carry on Glamping was – I still think it should’ve been called ‘What Can Go Wrong Will Go Wrong’. Still, the success of our wee field and the joy every vehicle brought to so many was heart-warming. Between Patricia and Lol’s Bar it definitely helped keep their memory alive and gave me the bug for rescuing more vehicles in need of a loving home.

“My bank manager, accountant and, of course, Bev are all thrilled that we we’re not stopping at just one Maltese bus. We will dearly miss our field and friends in Yorkshire, but the search for a new home to park our dreams upon has indeed begun, as planning meant we couldn’t expand and I’d have nowhere to park my new, well presently knackered, helicopter (UK bought as Bev has said strictly no more imports or burning ferries!).

“Oh, and preferably nowhere with a barn nearby!”

Comedy ‘Western’ for IMDb TV

IMDb TV, Amazon’s premium free streaming service, has given a formal pilot order to Western, a half-hour period comedy from Sony Pictures Television, Amazon Studios and Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s Sony TV-based Lord Miller.

The project, written by Michelle Morgan (It Happened in LA, K.I.T, Girl Most Likely) has had a blinking green light for several weeks, with casting already underway.

Western follows Polly, a high-society young woman in the 1800s who travels out West in search of a husband — only to discover that she has been catfished by a teenage boy. Now stranded, Polly, along with the town’s other inhabitants, must find their place in this ever-changing new world, confronting and defying all expectations society has of them along the way.

ITVX: new streaming service launching later this year

ITVX will be viewer led – viewers can choose to watch thousands of hours of content for free in an advertising funded tier or trade up to a subscription service which provides all that content ad-free and in addition provides thousands more hours of British boxsets from BritBox and other partners’ content.

In a step change to its traditional approach ITV will now adopt a digital first windowing strategy –  premiering much of its new content first on ITVX and subsequently months later on ITV linear channels.

There will be something for everyone on ITVX, with more fresh new content dropping every week of the year than any other British video on demand platform.

Latest comedy news and reviewsITVX will be the first streaming service in the UK to offer viewers the flexibility to access free content with ads and ad-free paid subscription, all in one place.

Viewers will now be able to stream new programme exclusives, with adverts, for free; ranging from premium ITV dramas, documentaries, US series, comedy and reality shows to blockbuster films and much, much more.

As well as “streaming first” exclusives, all the drama and comedy ITV commissions will be made available to viewers in one go on ITVX,  for free, as soon as the first episode has aired on ITV’s linear channels. The same will be true of the majority of reality series.

In the same service, subscription gives upgrade access to a premium tier where all of the free content can be viewed, without the ads, as well as a growing range of partner content, with exciting announcements to follow in due course.

Subscribers will also have access to BritBox which showcases the biggest streaming collection of UK series from BBC, Channel 4 and Channel 5 and includes exclusives such as Classic Doctor Who. BritBox has recently surpassed 733,000 subscribers, ahead of all business plan targets showing the popularity of the brand.

Until the launch of ITVX later this year, ITV Hub will continue to be the free streaming home of ITV, with ongoing plans to scale up the amount of content on the service in the run up to ITVX launch.  ITV Hub currently has 4,000 hours of content while ITVX will have around 15,000 hours at launch.

BritBox will remain the standalone subscription home of the best of British content including forthcoming originals Why Don’t They Ask Evans? and The Dry, until later this year, when the content on ITV Hub and BritBox come together in what will be the new streaming home of ITV, ITVX.

The pricing of the subscription tier in ITVX will be announced later this year.

ITVX – What’s in store…

ITVX will be a destination for new exclusive content, every week, a mixture of commissioned and acquired series, singles and films across a full array of programme genres.

New shows, streamed first, for free

A wealth of dramas will now stream first and for free on ITVX before arriving six to nine months later on ITV’s broadcast channel, including A Spy Among Friends, starring Damian Lewis and Guy Pearce, Nolly starring Helena Bonham Carter, Confessions of Frannie Langton starring Karla-Simone Spence, Sophie Cookson and Patrick Martins, Lenny Henry’s six part drama The Little Birds and Litvinenko starring David Tennant with many more to be revealed.

Other ITVX exclusive content will comprise a raft of exciting comedy, including a new series using Deep Fake techniques to create hilarious celebrity set-ups, as well as a feature-length film finale for Plebs. New and compelling factual content will include The Case Against Cosby – a premium documentary exposing new truths about accusations against Bill Cosby with exclusive access to survivors, as well as a landmark natural history series, A Year on Planet Earth, with many more streaming premieres to be revealed in the run up to launch.

The best of ITV and the US, plus blockbuster films

From Broadchurch to Brideshead Revisited, the groundbreaking Up documentary series to Love Island, ITV’s biggest shows past and present, including Victoria, A Confession, Quiz and Unforgotten will be available as full series boxsets, for free, on ITVX.

ITVX will also be home to a wide selection of popular US series. In the first of a series of deals to be announced, ITV has concluded a wide ranging content deal with WarnerMedia International Television Distribution for programmes including UK premieres of The Sex Lives of College Girls and All American, as well as The OC, One Tree Hill and select series of The 100, Supernatural and Veronica Mars.

Blockbuster films will also be a big part of the service and ITVX intends to stream 500 films for free in its first year alone, with a constantly refreshed selection of titles and 150 films on the service at any one time.

Home of the biggest events streamed Live

Whether it’s the forthcoming FIFA World Cup, I’m A Celebrity or the Love Island Final, ITV will remain the home to the big events that bring the nation together, with all these must-watch events streaming live through ITVX, as they are broadcast on ITV’s channels.

Themed channels (known as FAST Channels – Free Ad-supported TV Channels)

As well as being able to live stream ITV linear channels, ITVX will have an ever-changing host of exclusive themed channels, data driven to align with viewer preferences and popularity.

These constantly evolving pop-up channels will give a scheduled experience through a streaming service, with viewers able to choose where in the schedule they join.

With 20 channels at launch, including ‘Hell’s Kitchen US’, ‘True Crime’, ‘The Oxford Detectives’, ’90s Favourites’ and ‘The Chase’ as examples, viewers can have the ‘lean-back’ experience of watching a curated, scheduled channel, as part of the ITVX offering. ITV intends to offer viewers a new themed channel, every week of the year on ITVX.

Servant Of The People

Servant of The People won the Gold Remi Award for Television Comedy at the 2016 WorldFest in Houston

It also won a Silver Award at the World Media Festival in Hamburg and was a finalist at the Seoul International Drama Awards in 2016.

Servant of the People, to be broadcast on Channel 4 this Sunday, sees Zelenskyy play a high school teacher who accidentally becomes Ukrainian President after a video of him condemning government corruption goes viral on social media. From its first broadcast in 2015, it was hugely popular and became a record breaker for Ukrainian broadcaster, 1+1, racking up three series and a feature film.

Following the series’ success and popularity with the Ukrainian public and in a climate of voter dissatisfaction, Zelenskyy ran for and won a landslide victory in the 2019 presidential election, with a campaign promising an end to the corruption that his fictional character in Servant of the People, also fights against.

Servant of the People is produced by Studio Kvartal 95 for Channel 1+1, distributed by Eccho Rights.

Declan dreams of becoming a writer. It’s a dream that helps him escape the realities of his life – going through the motions at college and stacking supermarket shelves part-time, whilst fighting a battle with the ever-darkening thoughts in his head.

He has his pet Labrador for companionship and his best friend-turned-mentor, a pseudo-intellectual who works as a greenskeeper at the local municipal golf course, both of which help keep the worst of his anxieties at bay. But following a drunken row with local gangsters, Declan’s worries threaten to spiral out of control.

James Cavani – Declan’s idol and his hometown’s claim to fame – is a renowned writer, director and actor. But despite his success, his past hasn’t relinquished its hold of him, and through his younger sister’s battle with drug addiction, he finds himself returning to a world he thought he had escaped.

At face value, their lives couldn’t be more different, but perhaps fate has a way of bringing kindred spirits together – and perhaps each holds the other’s redemption in their hands.

NOT GOING OUT RETURNS TO BBC ONE WITH AN INCREDIBLY FRANK PAINTING – what do you think?

Latest comedy news and reviews:  Lee Mack’s multi award-winning hit show, and longest running sitcom on air, returns for a new series on BBC One this March.
It’s been over a year since Frank’s (Bobby Ball) passing and the always lovely Wendy (Deborah Grant), rediscovering a long lost love for painting, decides to create a very unique tribute in oils. How can Lee (Lee Mack) and Lucy (Sally Bretton) break the news that they don’t necessarily like the likeness? The usually curmudgeonly Geoffrey (Geoffrey Whitehead) seems very keen on the painting, but is all as it seems and might there be an even more eye-popping piece to emerge from his wife’s creative awakening. Could it get any more awkward? This is Not Going Out…
The series continues in the anarchy of a packed family house with the couple crashing from one near-disaster to the next and, of course, don’t forget to factor in close friends in the form of wife-weary, Toby (Hugh Dennis) and uptight ice-queen Anna (Abigail Cruttenden).

Produced by Avalon, Not Going Out is directed by Nick Wood and produced by Jamie Rix. The Executive Producers are Richard Allen-Turner, Rob Aslett, Lee Mack and Jon Thoday. The Commissioning Editor for the BBC is Gregor Sharp
Autobiography written by Marty which remained undiscovered for over 20 years after his death. Click image to buy

Parents of Marty Feldman were Ukrainian

Marty Feldman, one of Britain’s most creative comic minds was born in Canning Town, London, to a family of impoverished Jewish immigrants from Kyiv (Kiev). He had a solitary upbringing, rarely mixing with other children. He, like thousands of children, was evacuated to the countryside during WW2. It was whilst evacuated that the young Marty was exposed to the silent film talents of Buster Keaton, who Marty came to idolise as a performer.

After the war when the family’s fortunes had improved they moved to North London. Feldman attended various schools where he was bullied mainly because of his Jewish heritage as well as his looks. This got him into fights and arguments that resulted in him being expelled more than a dozen times. He boasted “I’ve been thrown out of some of the worst schools in London”.

Alan Carr is making a TV sitcom about his life growing up in his hometown in the 1980s.

In February last year we reported that the comedian  was looking for a boy to play a “young Alan” in the show based on his childhood in Northampton. He appears to have found the young actor he was looking for because reports are that filming of a pilot is underway by Baby Cow Productions, the company founded by Steve Coogan and Henry Normal.

Carr was born in Weymouth, Dorset, but spent most of his youth in the county town, where his father Graham played for, and managed, Northampton Town Football Club in the 80s. Graham Carr played for the Cobblers during their only season in the top flight in 1965-66 and managed them when they won the Fourth Division title in 1986-87.

In a social media post, Carr said they were looking for an actor aged between 10 and 13 with “my energy, my charisma”. He told those interested in the role to “put your fake comedy teeth and glasses away” as they did not want a caricature.

Instead, Carr said: “This is about a young boy on the cusp of puberty starting his journey in this very masculine world of lower league football.” They just “need someone with my kind of spirit.”Carr previously said that although “football was never really my thing”, he had a lot of memories of spending time at the club’s old County Ground – where home matches were played until they moved to Sixfields Stadium in the 1990s.

Trolls attack Kemah Bob after House of Games

This week saw the start of a new 10 week run of Richard Osman’s House of Games with a Champion’s week. Previous show winners Angela Barnes, Kemah Bob, Ade Edmonson and Beattie Edmonson took part.  Following episode one, trolls lit up social media with abusive posts some lambasting, 5 times winner, Angela Barnes for having the audacity to be intelligent and answering questions but mainly the posts and tweets were insulting and abusing Kemah Bob. It seems that some people find her voice annoying. It’s not the first time that Kemah has been the recipient of similar abuse.

Causing Angela Barnes to tweet “We had so much fun filming this show, it’s so upsetting to see people being so cruel when something was so joyful. You (Kemah) rock, and we had such a laugh. The abuse is inexcusable. People should be ashamed of themselves”.

The problem is these sad trolls are not ashamed of themselves and recently we see more and more of such disgusting behaviour. Unfortunately these pathetic individuals find encouragement in the conduct of the Prime Troll and nasty members of the Troll Council.

We can’t all like everything on TV, every comedian or actor. We can all have opinions, criticisms of shows and performances but personal abuse, is not acceptable. Never has been, never will be.

Decent people will always win and rise above the swamps in which these creatures exist.

Kemah tweeted, “It is really unfortunate to receive abuse when I should be celebrating what a wonderful time I had with Richard, Angela, Ade and Beattie.” It’s not just unfortunate it’s downright despicable and needs to be addressed by the legislators.

Richard Osman himself tweeted, ”Urghh, sorry Kemah. If it’s any consolation the ratings were through the roof last night, so Britain loves you.”

Yes it does.

Richard Osman’s House of Games is on BBC2 6 pm Mon – Fridays

The Chair – no second series on the curriculum

Sandra Oh’s discusses her Netflix comedy The Chair. “It’s really tricky to talk about,” Oh tells Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast. “It’s hard to gauge when it’s going to bite you. In some ways, when it gets out there in the culture, it doesn’t belong to you anymore.”

“I liked it so much immediately,” Oh said of the script. “And then I met up with Amanda and then the whole team and there was just so much like mindedness and a similar approach to work. I wanted to do something fun, actually I was looking for a comedy.”

Will there be more of “The Chair”? “No one’s called me, so I’m guessing that’s not happening,” she said. “I would have loved it, because I just thought that there was so much material there to potentially explore. Because the setting and the characters were established… I’m just happy that it happened, it was a great experience. But I am sad that it’s over.”

Richardson told the Radio Times,”They were absolutely superb. Obviously, the locations we film in, it’s the local rugby club and weird little cafes and it’s places we’ve picked where we feel comfortable and they just got into it straightaway and were happy to be any version of themselves that we asked.

“They were happy to be a bit pretentious at points or a bit silly or scathing or rude about us. It’s one of the things people find the hardest, I think, because it feels so real is being rude.”

Lucy Beaumont said, “They were such good sports. They didn’t need to take two days out of their busy lifestyles to do it. I couldn’t believe it.

Is Love On The Cards For Midge and Lenny ?

The Marvelous Mrs Maisel Series 4 now available on
Prime Video

Rachel Brosnahan speaks to The Hollywood Reporter: “It’s an intimate friendship, unlike a lot of the ones I’ve seen between men and women on television,” she said of Midge and Lenny. “They like each other because they admire each other; they admire each other’s talent and they admire each other’s drive. And that is allowed to be all that it is, you know?”

The actor even spoke seriously about the characters’ friendship with The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel creator Amy Sherman-Palladino. “Amy and I were in complete agreement about that. For me, it was about wanting to let their friendship be their friendship, as dynamic and wonderful and weird as it is,” Brosnahan explained. “I love it exactly as it is and I don’t need more from it, and I think Midge feels the same way.”

Amazon have announced that a fifth and final season of the show has been commissioned.

The Marvelous Mrs Maisel Lights Up The Screen

If you haven’t seen the first three seasons, you missed a compelling show. If you did, then you’ll know that Midge Maisel was heading for the stars when her routine naively outing singing superstar, Shy Baldwin, gets her thrown off his world tour and knocked back down to earth, with a thud.

Latest comedy news and reviews
There’s no argument that Midge Maisel is back with a bang: there are however plenty of arguments in the opening episode of season four. Everyone seems to be shouting at everyone else – making Eastenders seem like a love-in – fortunately the shouting subsides before the onslaught of a monumental headache sets in.

If you haven’t seen the first three seasons, you missed a compelling show. If you did, then you’ll know that Midge Maisel was heading for the stars when her routine naively outing singing superstar, Shy Baldwin, gets her thrown off his world tour and knocked back down to earth, with a thud.

But that’s good for viewers because Midge, or Miriam, as she seems to be called most often in this series, is back where she started: making her way in smoky drinking clubs and strip joints. It’s the environment in which she feels most at home and performs at her best.

The magnificent cast has returned in great form with sub-plots continuing their journeys through life’s trials and tribulations. Standout performances from Alex Borstein as Susie and Tony Shalhoub as Abe Weissman lead the way but there isn’t a weak link anywhere.

It is however, Rachel Brosnahan, as Mrs Maisel, who sets the screen alight delivering another impeccable performance as she has done from the start: never more so than when performing stand-up on small stages to intimate audiences. Although she yearns for the trappings and financial stability of success she feels more at home in smaller intimate venues. The glamour and glitz of the big tours, the arena performances, the razzamatazz does not set the inner Midge free. And she is only free when she is performing, spontaneously from the heart. It is both her strength and, as she has found out the hard way, her weakness.

So back at rock bottom, broke and fighting against entrenched male chauvinism of the 1960s comedy scene, will she claw her way back from the brink? Well, we’ll have to wait and see. Amazon are only releasing two episodes a week on Prime Video so we are yet to see what she and her manager, Susie, can do to restore her frozen career. I for one can’t wait for the thaw.

The Witchfinder is an original new comedy for BBC Two following a witchfinder and his suspect on a road-free road trip through an England gripped by civil war, famine and plague.

Joining the ensemble alongside the previously announced Tim Key and Daisy May Cooper are Jessica Hynes (Spaced, W1A), Daniel Rigby (Landscapers, Flowers), Tuwaine Barrett (Blue Story, The Personal History of David Copperfield), Reece Shearsmith (Inside No. 9, The League of Gentlemen), Julian Barratt (The Mighty Boosh, Mindhorn), Ricky Tomlinson (The Royle Family, Cracker), Rosie Cavaliero (Hunderby, Peep Show), Cariad Lloyd (Murder in Successville, Peep Show), Ellie White (The Other One, Stath Lets Flats), Vincent Franklin (The Thick of It, Gentleman Jack), Joplin Sibtain (Avenue 5, White Gold), Allan Mustafa (People Just Do Nothing, The Curse), Seb Cardinal (Cardinal Burns, This Time with Alan Partridge) and Dan Skinner (Shooting Stars, The Angelos Epithemiou Show).

It’s the year of our Lord 1645 and fear of witchcraft is rife. Puritanical Christianity, deep-seated superstition and a willingness to scapegoat outsiders have created a tinderbox of suspicion in which few are safe. In this environment, witchfinding has flourished, as self-appointed witch experts achieve hero status by investigating accusations of witchery and extracting confessions.

A failing witchfinder (Tim Key) transports a suspected witch (Daisy May Cooper) across 1640s East Anglia to a trial that could change his fortunes forever. But his captive is the worst possible travel companion: an inquisitive, uncouth woman whose ability to prick his pomposity and ask uncomfortable questions turns a straightforward journey into a life-changing ordeal.

The Witchfinder is a Baby Cow production for BBC Two, written and directed by Neil and Rob Gibbons (This Time with Alan Partridge, Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa, Mid Morning Matters, Veep). The producer is Joe Fraser, and the executive producers are Dave Lambert, Rupert Majendie and Sarah Monteith. The commissioning editor for the BBC is Tanya Qureshi.

The Witchfinder (6 x 30’) is coming soon to BBC Two and BBC iPlayer.

“Raven’s Home,” the long-running hit comedy series starring and executive produced by Raven-Symoné, will return for its fifth season on FRIDAY, MARCH 11, at 8:00 p.m. EST/PST on Disney Channel and DisneyNOW. A spinoff of the iconic Disney Channel comedy “That’s So Raven” (2003-2007),

Comedy In The Park promoters go bust

Promoter M&B Promotions has now ceased trading, blaming the Covid pandemic – leaving ticket holders out of pocket

It is with a heavy heart and deep regret that we must announce the cancellation of all of our scheduled events, and the end of operations for M&B Promotions Ltd and our ticket platform Simple Ticketing Ltd.

We have successfully delivered hundreds of events all over the country since 2019. With our final programme of events taking place in December 2021.

We were amongst many high-profile event organisers forced to reschedule many events due to the COVID 19 pandemic. With vast amounts of finance already tied up with artist deposits, suppliers, venues and marketing this has put a huge financial strain on the company.

Despite the best efforts of everyone involved, this combined with the extreme logistical and financial setbacks caused by the pandemic mean it’s no longer viable for us to continue trading.

We have contacted all customers, artists, venues and suppliers to notify them of this terrible situation we have found ourselves in.

We would like to thank the artists that have worked with us, the venues that have hosted our events and the thousands of people who have supported us by attending our past events.

To those who have been let down by this situation, we are deeply sorry. Ticket holders for any cancelled event who purchased tickets via easyticketing.co.uk should contact either Paypal for a refund or your bank/credit card provider to administer a charge back. If tickets were purchased anywhere else, please contact your point of purchase.

Have you ever been tickled, missus?

The Tuckers: a gem hidden in the Welsh valleys

Such a shame that this gem of a show is not shown on BBC nationally.
The Tuckers is a very funny sitcom written by, and starring, Steve Speirs. The second series is screening on BBC Wales but in the rest of the UK it is available on iPlayer.
Filmed in the Aber Valley above Caerphilly, this comedy follows the fortunes of the Tucker family, a close-knit extended family of ‘loveable rogues’ who earn their living in a number of ways – many of which are on ‘the wrong side of the law’.

The second series, delayed because of the pandemic, features a stellar all-Welsh cast alongside Steve Speirs (Stella, Upstart Crow, After Life) including much-respected actress Lynn Hunter (Baker Boys, Stella), Robert Pugh (Game Of Thrones), Kimberley Nixon (Fresh Meat) and Alexandria Riley (The End Of The F***ing World).

Steve Speirs says “I am so thrilled that The Tuckers is back for two more series (a third has been commissioned). It’s a testament to the ongoing support from BBC Wales and the amazing fans who took the show (series one) to their hearts so quickly and in big numbers.

“People can expect to get to know the family a lot better: Their lives, their loves, their fears. There’ll be a bit of heartache for them along the way no doubt, but mainly laughs. I think that’s what we need right now. Laughs. And Lots of them!”

Glyn Tucker (Spiers) lives with his straight-talking mother, his two sons, Billy and Bobby live with them. Next door lives Bobby’s ex-wife, Natalie, who’s frequently visited over night by her new boyfriend, Roberto.. Unfortunately for Bobby the walls between the two terrace houses are paper thin.

Look out for Alan David as Dai ‘Up and Down’, you’ll understand the nickname when you watch, and do watch.

Back To The Futurama

Almost a decade after it signed off,      Futurama, the animated comedy from creators Matt Groening and David X. Cohen, has been rebooted for a 20-episodes on Hulu.
Futurama, which revolves around a pizza delivery guy who accidentally freezes himself in  1999 and  wakes up a thousand years later, earned six Emmys during its original run on Fox and Comedy Central.

Adult animation continues to be a popular genre with viewers and producers as the shows are cheaper to produce than their live-action scripted counterparts. Successful animated shows such as The Simpsons, Rick and Morty and Family Guy can become multi-billion-dollar franchises.

Avingagiraffe believes that original stars of Futurama, Billy West (Fry) and Katey Sagal (Leela) along with ensemble players who voiced multiple characters Tress MacNeille, Maurice LaMarche, Lauren Tom, Phil LaMarr and David Herman will all return, along with John DiMaggio, who provided the voice behind the wise-cracking robot Bender, although no deal has yet been finalised with him.
