New Comedy ‘Spreadsheet’

Latest Comedy News: Channel 4 has acquired eight-part comedy series SPREADSHEET starring Katherine Parkinson (The IT Crowd, Here We Go).

The show poses the age-old question: can women really have it all – if by ‘all’ we mean sexual freedom, a career, a family and their sanity?”

Spreadsheet looks to answer this conundrum, centring on a divorced, hectic mother-of-two Lauren (Katherine Parkinson) who is looking for sex without commitment.

Answering a call from a horny guy while her child has a meltdown about toothpaste and she struggles to find that crucial piece of paperwork for court, while dealing with ridiculous questions from her twit of an ex-husband Jake, is not the erotic experience she’s after. To get what she wants, Lauren is going to need a watertight planner.

With the help of best friend Alex (played by Rowan Witt), Lauren develops the ‘Spreadsheet’: a database of sex options, customised to ensure her sushi train of sex rolls around with variety and order amidst the chaos of her life. What Lauren didn’t expect was a slew of needy men, which apparently even a well-managed excel tracker can’t control.

Katherine Parkinson commented: “It was so much fun filming Spreadsheet in Melbourne with the most brilliant team of people. I loved living Lauren’s hectic life for a few months, and I am thinking about going on dating apps myself now.”

Alongside Katherine Parkinson, Spreadsheet features a stellar cast including Rowan Witt (The Book of Mormon, The Matrix, South Pacific), Robbie Magisiva (The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, Wentworth) and Zahra Newman (Neighbours).

Produced by Northern Pictures and created by Kala Ellis with Darren Ashton, this is Kala’s debut series as writer/creator. Global distribution for Spreadsheet is handled by ITV Studios.

However his comic talents were revealed playing George Cole’s put upon assistant in Minder as well in the comedy drama Stay Lucky and the sitcom On The Up playing with Joan Sims (Mrs Wembley) and Sam Kelly.

Waterman became well-known for singing the theme songs to many of his shows, and was caricatured by David Walliams in Little Britain as a result. During his acting career, he continued to pursue his love of music, and had number one hits in Australia and New Zealand, and reached No3 in the UK charts with I Could Be So Good For You, the theme song from Minder.

Alan Carr’s Adventures With Agatha Christie

This summer, Alan Carr, the Chattyman and life-long Christie fanboy is going on a very personal Great British adventure inspired by his literary heroine. In this funny, celebratory and fact-packed travelogue Alan will head off in search of the places that inspired one of the world’s best loved and most read literary figures,  Agatha Christie.

Agatha’s novels are not only clever, twisting, and satisfying – they’re intrinsically British. No other author sums up the idea of a bygone Britishness quite the way she does. From Miss Marple’s genteel, pastoral world of tea with the Vicar to the metropolitan elegance depicted in Poirot, Agatha Christie painted a picture of Britishness that can be hard to find in modern Britain. But Alan is going to try, in this three-part series, from Wales-based Boom, part of ITV Studios.

Stephen Merchant’s, The Outlaws, comedy drama about seven strangers forced to undertake community service in Bristol will return for a second season next month.

Read review of series 1 here>

The official logline for the new series says: Following on directly from the first series, The Outlaws still have time to serve on their sentences – but now they must face the fallout from their actions. If they thought the criminal underworld or the local police were done with them, they are sorely mistaken. The Outlaws must depend on one another while working with unlikely allies to atone for their sins – but can they save themselves without sacrificing their souls?”.

Alongside Stephen Merchant (who also created and writes the series), the returning cast includes Academy Award winner Christopher Walken, Rhianne Barreto, Gamba Cole, Darren Boyd, Clare Perkins, Eleanor Tomlinson, Jessica Gunning, Charles Babalola, Nina Wadia, Dolly Wells, Ian McElhinney, Claes Bang, Tom Hanson and Aiyana Goodfellow.

As a special treat Julia Davis, perhaps best known as Gavin & Stacey’s Dawn, is set to join the series as a guest star in the new season.

The Outlaws season 2 will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer
on June 5th. Season 1 is available to stream on BBC iPlayer now.

Stand-up Comedian Dave Chappelle Attacked

Stand-up comedian Dave Chappelle was attacked on stage on Tuesday during a performance at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles.

Last year Chappelle was subjected to criticism and protests when his Netflix special was accused of being transphobic.

Clips shared on social media showed someone running into the star at the Netflix Is A Joke Festival. Although other videos showed the comic apparently unharmed after returning to the stage when the comedian made light of the incident suggesting to the audience that the attacker “was a trans man”.

ABC journalist Stephanie Wash, reported that  fellow comic Chris Rock – who was slapped on stage by Will Smith at the Oscars in March – then came on stage to offer his support to Chappelle.

Vicky McClure Champions The ‘Everyday’

Vicky McClure forms own TV production companyVicky McClure, who plays Detective Inspector Kate Fleming in the BBC series Line of Duty and Lana Washington in ITV’s Trigger Point, believes there are not enough programmes that show ordinary lives on television, that more shows need to be made by working-class people.

She told The Times newspaper, “There’s not an awful lot out there at the moment that I feel is representing the everyday. I don’t think certain people live in the real world because of privilege. They forget what it’s like to deal with the mundane and the struggle of the day-to-day.”

So she and her fiancé Jonny Owen, a sports columnist for The Sunday Times, have formed a production company BYO (Build Your Own) Films in conjunction with All3 Media to champion more productions that represent the ‘everyday’. More news when we have it.
