Comedy stars who died in 2021

In what was another extremely tough year for the comedy industry we sadly saw a number of talents leave the stage for the last time.

They will be missed.


Marion Ramsey, best known for being on Broadway and starring in the “Police Academy” films, died on Jan. 7. She was 73

Gregory Sierra, best known for his roles on Sanford and Son and Barney Miler, died from cancer in early January, according to Deadline. The actor was 83 years old.

Dustin Diamond, known for playing  Samuel “Screech” Powers on the hit sitcom “Saved by the Bell,” died due to carcinoma in a Florida hospital. He was 44.

Peter Mark Richman, an actor with over 130 television credits,  of natural causes. Richman notably held recurring roles on Three’s Company as Reverend Snow Jan 14 aged 93

Cloris Leachman, Emmy- and Oscar-winning actor best known for her role in “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” died on Jan. 26 of natural causes. She was 94.

Allan Burns, the Emmy-winning writer and co-creator of The Munsters and , .Mary Tyler Moore Show Jan 30 aged 85



Trevor Peacock – actor best known for playing Jim Trott in the Vicar of Dibley – died March 8, aged 89

Richard Gilliland, husband of Jean Smart, died at the age of 71 on March 18 following a brief illness 

Richard Gilliland died on March 18 after a brief unspecified illness, he was 71. Notable credits include iconic sitcoms thirtysomething and Designing Women,

Paul Mooney, born Paul Gladney, the comic died on May 19 in his Oakland, California, home at age 79,

George Segal, the oscar nominated actor who most recently played Grandpa in The Goldbergs died aged 87 on March 23

, the actress best known for her portrayal of sarcastic Lucille Bluth on Arrested Development,  at the age of 80. March 24


Gloria Henry, who played Alice Mitchell, the mom of the titular character in the sitcom Dennis the Menace, died April 4. She was 98.

Paul Ritter – actor best known for his roles in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and Friday Night Dinner – died April 5, aged 54

Anne Beatts,  pioneering comedy writer, died April 7. She was 74. Beatts was one of the founding writers for Saturday Night Live when it debuted in 1975.

James Hampton died April 7. He was 84. Hampton was best known on TV as Hannibal Dobbs in 1960s sitcom F Troop,


Marcus A. York, an actor best known for playing Billy Merchant on The Office (US),  after a “brief and unexpected illness.”
He was 55. May 19

Gavin MacLeod died on May 29 at 90 years old. He appeared in The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Love Boat, Oz, The King of Queens, and That ’70s Show.


Max Rosenthal, the Everybody Loves Raymond actor and father of the show’s creator, Phil Rosenthal, died at age 95,


Suzzanne Douglas died on July 6 at age 64. The actress was best known for her role as matriarch Jerri Peterson on the WB sitcom The Parent ‘Hood from 1995–1999.

Tom O’Connor, comedian and TV presenter of such shows as Name That Tune died on the 18th aged 81

Jackie Mason, iconic Borscht Belt comedian  died on July 24 at Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan . He was 93 years old.


Trevor Moore, the comedian best known for founding the sketch comedy troupe the Whitest Kids U Know, . He was 41. Aug 6th

Markie Post The Night Court actress died Saturday, August 7, after a nearly four-year battle with cancer. She was 70.

Una Stubbs, a mainstay of British TV who appeared on such shows as , Till Death Us Do Part, Sherlock and Wurzel Gummidge,  after an illness. Aug 12 aged 84

Sean Lock, much admired comedian, actor and writer known for his regular appearances on panel shows such as 8 Out of 10 Cats. Died aged 58 on Aug 16

Ed Asner won multiple awards for his roles in sitcom The Mary Tyler Moore Show, drama series Lou Grant and Pixar’s animated hit Up. Died on Aug 29  at the age of 91.


Phil Jerrod – stand-up comedian best known for appearances on Mock the Week – died September 4, aged 42

Tony Selby passed away aged 83 on September 5 He played Croporal marsh in the 70s series Get Some In

Anthony ‘A.J.’ Johnson the comedian, known for his work in Friday and House Party, died on September 6 at age 55,

Art Metrano, the comedian and actor who starred as Mauser in the Police Academy films, died sept 8 at 84.

Norm Macdonald, the beloved comedian known for his work as a cast member and Weekend Update anchor on Saturday Night Live, died sept 14

Gavan O’Herlihy, the Irish actor known for playing Chuck Cunningham in early episodes of Happy Days , died Sept. 15 in England. He was 70.

Robert Fyfe who played the timid lothario Howard Sibshaw in the long-running TV series Last of the Summer Wine died on 15th aged 90.

John Challis, best known for his portrayal of  Boycie in the popular TV series Only Fools and Horse and the spin-off series The Green Green Grass, died on 19th aged 79

Willy Garson died Sept. 21 at the age of 57. In 1998, he joined Sex and the City as Carrie Bradshaw’s gay bestie Stanford Blatch, a role he played across the films and into the spin-off series And Just Like That,

Jay Sandrich, the Emmy-winning director known for his work on such beloved TV programs as The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Cosby Show, and The Golden Girls, died Sept. 22 at 89.


Cynthia Harris, best known for playing Paul Reiser’s mother on the hit comedy Mad About You, died Oct. 3 at the age of 87.

Betty Lynn the actress best known for playing Barney Fife’s (Don Knotts) girlfriend Thelma Lou on The Andy Griffith Show died at 95 on October 16th

James Michael Tyler, who played Gunther on Friends, died on Sunday October 24th  He was 59.

Mort Sahl,  ground-breaking Canadian stand-up comedian died Oct. 26 at age 94. He blazed a trail for politically charged satirical comedy through the 1950s.

Ricarlo Flanagan, who appeared on ShamelessInsecureLast Comic Standing and more, died at age 40 possibly from Covid

Phil Butler, renowned magician and comedian, who died at the age of 51 whilst appearing on a cruise ship in Portugal

Reg Anderson, (Gavin Stott) comedian and comedy prop act was a stalwart of the Scottish comedy scene died on 26th  


Lou Cutell – star of Seinfeld and Grey’s Anatomy – died November 21, aged 91

Eddie Mekka, the veteran TV and stage actor best known for his role as Carmine Ragusa on the 1970s sitcom Laverne & Shirley, . He was 69. Nov 27

David Gulpilil, the Australian actor best known for his iconic role in Crocodile Dundee, Died on 29th, he was 68 years old.

Henry Woolf, actor, director and writer, from sitcom to Shakespeare born 20 January 1930; died 11 November 2021 in Saskatoon, Canada


Emma Emslie much loved promoter and London comedy club owner died on December 1st at the age of 54

Geoffrey Rowe, better known as Jethro, died on the 14th aged 73 . He caught Covid, from which he died, just a year after retiring  from the stage.

Jessica Campbell, actress from Freaks and Geeks and Election, died December 29 aged 38

Betty White who starred as Rose Nylund in the legendary sitcom Golden Girls has died on New Year’s Eve at the age of 99, just two weeks short of her 100th birthday on Jan 17th.
